Talk: Water
Dive into the fascinating geology beneath our feet with Amanda Surfus of Door County Soil & Water! In this informative program, Amanda will explore how karst landscapes—formed from fractured limestone and dolomite—shape the way water moves through Door County.
Karst systems are known for their thin soils, sinkholes, disappearing streams, and rapid water flow underground. These unique features make our region beautiful, but they also create special challenges and responsibilities when it comes to water quality, groundwater protection, and land stewardship.
Amanda will explain how water travels through cracks and channels in the rock, why karst areas are particularly vulnerable to contamination, and what local residents and visitors can do to help protect our shared water resources. The presentation will combine science, stories from the field, and examples specific to Door County’s landscape.
