Wild Ones/ DCMGA: Leave the Leaves

Would you like to spend less time removing fallen leaves from your yard? Coggin Herringa will discuss how to manage the leaves so they can decompose naturally without becoming a nuisance. This event is free and open to the public. Coggin is the co-chairman of the Door County Master Gardeners Association Education Committee and President of the Door Peninsula Chapter of the Wild Ones.
As we prepare for the change of seasons, we begin nesting in our homes for the approaching colder months. Discover how leaving leaves in the landscape can protect shelter for overwintering pollinators and wildlife while enriching the soil and supporting a healthier ecosystem – all while reducing fall yard work. Fallen leaves are valuable; they provide a winter habitat for bumble bees, countless pollinators, beneficial insects and small creatures. Insects which have overwintered in the leaves become an important food source in the spring for birds as they feed their young. The decomposing leaves feed the soil, building organic matter and improving soil structure and moisture retention.
