SUMMARY:Tale: "Creekfinding: A True Story"
DESCRIPTION:Join Door County Librarian Beth Lokken as she reads the weekly tale\, Creekfinding: A True Story written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Claudia McGehee. \nOnce upon a time a creek burbled up and tumbled across a prairie valley. It was filled with insects and brook trout that ate them\, frogs that chirruped and birds watching for bugs and fish. This is a true story about a man named Mike who went looking for that creek long after it was buried under fields of corn. It is the story of how a creek can be brought back to life\, and with it a whole world of nature. \nIn the words of award-winning author Jacqueline Briggs Martin and the enchanting illustrations by Claudia McGehee\, this heartening tale of an ecosystem restored in the Driftless Area of northeast Iowa unfolds in a way that will charm and inform young readers who are drawn to a good mystery\, the wonders of nature—and\, of course\, big earth-moving machines. \n\n🌿 Meet in front of the Collins Learning Center\n🌿 Drop in — no registration required\n🌿 Free and open to the public\n🌿 All ages welcome!\n SUMMER AT CROSSROADS\n \nTRAIL TALES: Take a self-guided hike starting at the west trailhead where the story unfolds along the trail. \nTINKERS: Stop by during open hours for ever-changing self-led hands on activities. \nTALES: Enjoy the weekly tale read aloud on Mondays at 2 PM. \nTALKS: A specialist brings each weekly theme to life at 2 PM on Thursdays. \nJOURNEYS WITH JOAN: Summer nature exploration continues Tuesdays at 1 PM with Naturalist Joan Wilkie. \nMore details.

SUMMARY:Talk: Water
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the fascinating geology beneath our feet with Amanda Surfus of Door County Soil & Water! In this informative program\, Amanda will explore how karst landscapes—formed from fractured limestone and dolomite—shape the way water moves through Door County. \n\nKarst systems are known for their thin soils\, sinkholes\, disappearing streams\, and rapid water flow underground. These unique features make our region beautiful\, but they also create special challenges and responsibilities when it comes to water quality\, groundwater protection\, and land stewardship. \nAmanda will explain how water travels through cracks and channels in the rock\, why karst areas are particularly vulnerable to contamination\, and what local residents and visitors can do to help protect our shared water resources. The presentation will combine science\, stories from the field\, and examples specific to Door County’s landscape. \n\n\n💦 Drop in — no registration required\n💦 Free and open to the public\n💦 All ages welcome! \nJoin us to gain a deeper understanding of the hidden pathways beneath the peninsula and learn how thoughtful choices can keep our waters clean and healthy.\n\n SUMMER AT CROSSROADS\n \nTRAIL TALES: Take a self-guided hike starting at the west trailhead where the story unfolds along the trail.

SUMMARY:Talk: Creek Creatures
DESCRIPTION:Take a closer look at the tiny creatures that tell big stories about water quality! Join Gretchen Recupero Schmelzer\, a dedicated Water Action Volunteer (WAV)\, for an eye‑opening exploration of stream macroinvertebrates—the insects\, crustaceans\, and other small aquatic organisms that live in our creeks. \n\nThese “creek macros” are powerful indicators of stream health. Gretchen will introduce participants to the amazing diversity of macroinvertebrates found in Door County waterways\, explain how scientists use them to assess water quality\, and share what their presence (or absence!) can reveal about pollution\, habitat conditions\, and the overall wellbeing of our freshwater ecosystems. \nExpect a fun mix of hands‑on discovery and engaging science as you learn how to identify common stream macros\, understand their life cycles\, and appreciate the essential role they play in aquatic food webs. Great for curious kids\, nature enthusiasts\, and anyone who loves exploring life beneath the surface. \n\n\n💧 Drop in — no registration required\n💧 Free and open to the public\n💧 All ages welcome! \n\nCome prepared to get a little wet\, get a lot curious\, and discover the hidden critters that help keep our streams healthy.\n\n\n SUMMER AT CROSSROADS\n \nTRAIL TALES: Take a self-guided hike starting at the west trailhead where the story unfolds along the trail.
