SUMMARY:Wandering Wednesday: Trees Along the Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Master Naturalist and Door County Land Trust hike leader Joe Kopec for a guided walk through the Crossroads plantation and surrounding trails. We’ll begin by sharing our favorite trees before exploring how to identify common Northeast Wisconsin species using the Wisconsin DNR’s Tree Identification brochure. Along the way\, we’ll examine bark\, leaves\, growth habits\, and other key characteristics that help distinguish local trees. \n\nThis approximately one-mile walk will cross bridges and forested trails as we make our way to a reforestation site\, where participants will have the opportunity to help plant oak trees. We’ll discuss the importance of oaks as keystone species\, drawing inspiration from Doug Tallamy’s book The Nature of Oaks\, and learn why these remarkable trees support hundreds of wildlife species and play a critical role in healthy ecosystems. \nUsing tree identification apps and field guides\, we’ll practice identifying trees encountered along the route while also learning about Crossroads’ ongoing reforestation efforts. Participants will discover how native tree planting benefits wildlife\, strengthens local habitats\, and helps restore forest diversity. \nWhether you’re a seasoned nature enthusiast or simply curious about the trees around you\, this hands-on walk offers a chance to learn\, explore\, and contribute to the future of Door County’s forests. \n\nWell-behaved dogs allowed on leash. \nMeet at the Collins Learning Center. Registration is not required. Open to the public and free thanks to our donors.

SUMMARY:Tale: "Curious About Fossils"
DESCRIPTION:Join us as our weekly story\, Curious About Fossils written by Kate Waters\, is read aloud. \nAren’t you curious about what Earth was like long ago? What creatures lived before us? What happened to the dinosaurs? \nCurious about Fossils explains why and where fossils form and looks at the colorful lives and important discoveries of some of the great early fossil hunters and collectors\, including Mary Anning who unearthed the first ichthyosaur skeleton; Richard Owen who coined the word dinosaur; and Barnum Brown\, who discovered the first remains of a T-rex. Then the adventure continues into modern times\, where scientists on fossil hunts in places like North Dakota’s Hell Creek Formation use computers and other technology to dig up the fossilized bones\, teeth\, and even poop that provide clues to the past. \nA must read for every kid who’s ever collected a shark tooth or trilobite! \n🌿 Meet in front of the Collins Learning Center\n🌿 Drop in — no registration required\n🌿 Free and open to the public\n🌿 All ages welcome!\n🌞 SUMMER AT CROSSROADS\n \nTRAIL TALES: Take a self-guided hike starting at the west trailhead where the story unfolds along the trail. \nTINKERS: Stop by during open hours for ever-changing self-led hands on activities. \nTALES: Enjoy the weekly tale read aloud on Mondays at 2 PM through August 17. \nTALKS: A specialist brings each weekly theme to life at 2 PM on Thursdays through August 20. \nJOURNEYS WITH JOAN: Summer nature exploration continues Tuesdays at 1 PM through August 18 with Naturalist Joan Wilkie. \nMore details.\n

SUMMARY:Talk: Ancient Silurian Seas
DESCRIPTION:Travel back hundreds of millions of years to a time when Door County was covered by a warm\, shallow sea! Join Naturalist Coggin Heeringa for a fascinating program exploring the ancient Silurian seas and the fossils they left behind. \n\nCoggin will guide participants through Door County’s deep geological past\, explaining how coral reefs\, marine invertebrates\, and other sea life flourished here during the Silurian Period—long before dinosaurs or even land plants existed.
