SUMMARY:Wild Ones/ DCMGA: Leave the Leaves
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to spend less time removing fallen leaves from your yard? Coggin Herringa will discuss how to manage the leaves so they can decompose naturally without becoming a nuisance. This event is free and open to the public. Coggin is the co-chairman of the Door County Master Gardeners Association Education Committee and President of the Door Peninsula Chapter of the Wild Ones. \nAs we prepare for the change of seasons\, we begin nesting in our homes for the approaching colder months. Discover how leaving leaves in the landscape can protect shelter for overwintering pollinators and wildlife while enriching the soil and supporting a healthier ecosystem – all while reducing fall yard work. Fallen leaves are valuable; they provide a winter habitat for bumble bees\, countless pollinators\, beneficial insects and small creatures. Insects which have overwintered in the leaves become an important food source in the spring for birds as they feed their young. The decomposing leaves feed the soil\, building organic matter and improving soil structure and moisture retention. \n\nFree and open to the public. Brought to you by the Door County Master Gardeners Association and Wild Ones – Door Peninsula(opens in new tab).

SUMMARY:DCMGA: Growing Together Education Series - Winter Sowing Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Veteran gardener Karen Kidd will explain how you can sow seeds outdoors in milk jugs and place them outside for the winter. This hands-off approach allows the seeds to determine when the time is right to sprout.\n\nEven though it is too early to sow seeds inside\, you can sow seeds outdoors with the winter sowing method utilizing milk jugs to create mini-greenhouses. Winter sowing is particularly useful for starting native plants which require cold stratification. Resulting in stronger\, hardened-off seedlings\, winter sowing is a cost-effective way to garden. This technique requires no indoor grow lights and saves space\, as the container acts as a miniature environment that expose seeds to necessary cold stratification and natural conditions\, allowing seeds to germinate when the conditions are right.\n\nFree and open to the public. Brought to you by the Door County Master Gardeners Association.
