This event is free and open to the public. Coggin is the co-chairman of the Door County Master Gardeners Association Education Committee and President of the Door Peninsula Chapter of the Wild Ones. \nAs we prepare for the change of seasons\, we begin nesting in our homes for the approaching colder months. Discover how leaving leaves in the landscape can protect shelter for overwintering pollinators and wildlife while enriching the soil and supporting a healthier ecosystem – all while reducing fall yard work. Fallen leaves are valuable; they provide a winter habitat for bumble bees\, countless pollinators\, beneficial insects and small creatures. Insects which have overwintered in the leaves become an important food source in the spring for birds as they feed their young. The decomposing leaves feed the soil\, building organic matter and improving soil structure and moisture retention. \n\nFree and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Monarchs may be the most widely recognized butterflies around\, but how much do you know about their life cycle and migration? Guest naturalist Karen Newbern will offer a fascinating program on the life cycle of these well-known insects. She will also describe the amazing migration these orange and black butterflies will make to isolated forest groves in Mexico where they will overwinter. \n\nAfter the talk Karen will demonstrate the method for tagging monarchs. Then participants\, armed with insect nets\, will venture out into the meadows at Crossroads to catch\, tag and release the monarchs\, assuming weather conditions and monarch migration patterns cooperate.\n\nThis program is being co-sponsored by Wild Ones-Door Peninsula and Crossroads at Big Creek.\n\nReservations not required.
