What’s Happening: Summer at Crossroads

Over Memorial Day weekend at Crossroads at Big Creek, the Collins Learning Center will be closed and, while the trails will remain open, no programs are scheduled. It is our version of a “Grand Pause.”
In classical music, a “Grand Pause” occurs when an orchestra suddenly falls silent for a prolonged moment, building anticipation for an exciting movement yet to come.
And Summer at Crossroads promises to be just that: an exciting season filled with an environmental programs for curious minds of all ages.
Each week will revolve around a different environmental theme, with programs organized into three categories: Tales, Talks, and Tinkers. Tales invite families into the world of stories and nature, Talks offer deeper exploration of environmental topics, and Tinkers provide hands-on fun for all ages.
Each Monday at 2 p.m., librarian Beth Lokken will host an outdoor Story Time featuring a children’s book connected to the week’s environmental theme. As a speci.al bonus, each week’s story will also be featured along the new Storybook Walk on Meadow Trail. Enter the trail at the West Trailhead near the sign. A story book is already featured now enabling families to experience a story while exploring nature together.
On Tuesdays at 1 p.m., summer naturalist Joan Wilke will lead “Journeys with Joan,” offering family-friendly activities inspired by the weekly theme.
Crossroads’ year-round “Wandering Wednesdays” program will continue throughout the summer with a gentle, naturalist-led hike — typically lasting about an hour — exploring a variety of preserve locations and seasonal highlights.
“Talks” is a new summer lecture series designed for lifelong learners. Each week, a knowledgeable environmental speaker will present a program tied to the weekly theme. Topics throughout the summer will include dragonflies, bees, water, creek creatures, birds, mammals, mushrooms, geology, and fossils.
Speaking of exciting, for many people, connecting with nature means getting out on the trails. The annual Crossroads Trail Run returns June 13, featuring 2K, 5K, and 10K distances. Chip timing allows for staggered starts based on route length.
Throughout the summer, the science lab at Crossroads will once again host the Environmental Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) of University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh for ongoing water quality research and well testing.
Crossroads will also continue its outdoor education partnerships with local Boys & Girls Club and YMCA camps.
After this “Grand Pause,” Crossroads at Big Creek will launch a summer filled with opportunities for learning, exploration, and connection with nature for residents and visitors alike.
