Wandering Wednesday: Trees Along the Creek

July 29 @ 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Join Certified Master Naturalist and Door County Land Trust hike leader Joe Kopec for a guided walk through the Crossroads plantation and surrounding trails. We’ll begin by sharing our favorite trees before exploring how to identify common Northeast Wisconsin species using the Wisconsin DNR’s Tree Identification brochure. Along the way, we’ll examine bark, leaves, growth habits, and other key characteristics that help distinguish local trees.

This approximately one-mile walk will cross bridges and forested trails as we make our way to a reforestation site, where participants will have the opportunity to help plant oak trees. We’ll discuss the importance of oaks as keystone species, drawing inspiration from Doug Tallamy’s book The Nature of Oaks, and learn why these remarkable trees support hundreds of wildlife species and play a critical role in healthy ecosystems.

Using tree identification apps and field guides, we’ll practice identifying trees encountered along the route while also learning about Crossroads’ ongoing reforestation efforts. Participants will discover how native tree planting benefits wildlife, strengthens local habitats, and helps restore forest diversity.

Whether you’re a seasoned nature enthusiast or simply curious about the trees around you, this hands-on walk offers a chance to learn, explore, and contribute to the future of Door County’s forests.

Well-behaved dogs allowed on leash.

Meet at the Collins Learning Center. Registration is not required. Open to the public and free thanks to our donors.
